Ask ten people in Kolkata what went wrong with their last floor and you tend to hear the same three answers: it swelled after a spill, it lifted during the monsoon, or the polish gave up two summers in. What SPC flooring actually is

SPC stands for Stone Polymer Composite. The core of each plank is a dense mix of limestone powder and PVC, pressed into a rigid board, then finished with a printed wood-look decor layer and a clear wear layer on top. There is no timber, no HDF, no paper-based core anywhere in the build.

That single fact drives everything else. Wood fibre is what swells when it meets water — and a stone-polymer core has none in it to swell. Leave water standing on an SPC plank overnight and it comes out the same dimension it went in. Do the same to laminate and the edges crown permanently. That damage is not reversible, which is why we are careful about where we recommend laminate in this city.

Why SPC suits Kolkata specifically

Kolkata spends much of the year at high humidity, then swings the other way through the dry weeks of winter. Natural timber responds to that swing — it takes on moisture and tightens in July, gives it back and opens small gaps in January. It is not a defect; it is what wood does. Engineered wood moderates the movement but does not eliminate it.

A stone-polymer core does not track humidity at all. That stability is the strongest argument for SPC in an Eastern Indian home, and it is why we recommend it so often for ground-floor flats in older Central and North Kolkata buildings, where rising damp through the slab is a real and recurring problem.

Two more properties matter locally. SPC is termite-proof — there is nothing in the plank for termites to eat, no small consideration in buildings with decades-old timber joinery. And it is fire resistant, often the deciding factor when we specify flooring for offices and commercial premises.

SPC, laminate or engineered wood?

The short version: engineered wood gives you a genuine timber surface and suits dry rooms where you want real grain underfoot. Laminate is the value option with a convincing print and a hard surface, but its HDF core is water-sensitive — keep it out of kitchens and off balconies. SPC trades the real-timber surface for total water immunity and dimensional stability.

Where SPC works best

Kitchens and utility areas are the obvious case: spills, machine overflow and daily mopping do not touch the plank. Covered balconies and verandahs, where monsoon splashback rules out any wood-cored product. Ground-floor and older-building flats, where sub-floor moisture is the known risk. Homes with children or pets — the wear layer handles claw marks and dropped toys far better than a lacquered wood finish. And offices, clinics and retail, where fire resistance and a one-day installation over a weekend both count.

Where we would still steer you toward wood: a formal drawing room or master bedroom where the look and feel of real grain is the whole point, and water was never going to be an issue.

What to check before you buy

Wear layer thickness. This is the number that decides how long the printed surface survives, and it is the specification most commonly left vague. Ask for it in writing before you pay.

Plank thickness and pre-attached underlay. A pre-bonded IXPE or EVA backing changes how the floor sounds underfoot — a meaningful difference in an apartment.

The locking system, not just the plank. The joint is what fails first on a cheap floor. Our range is built on the Welspun Click-N-Lock system, which locks mechanically and needs no adhesive at all.

Sub-floor condition. SPC is rigid, but it is not a levelling compound. A floor with a genuine dip needs correcting first, and any supplier who says otherwise is setting you up for a hollow-sounding patch.
