Most people who ask us about blackout blinds are not really asking about blinds. They are asking about sleep: a bedroom that turns bright at 5 a.m., a west-facing window that floods the room after lunch, a night-shift worker trying to rest in a Kolkata afternoon. This guide covers what blackout actually means, which type of blind to choose, and the fitting details that decide whether the room goes properly dark.
What “blackout” actually means
The word is used loosely, so it is worth separating three grades of fabric.
Blackout fabric is coated or built from several layers so that almost no light passes through the cloth. Room-darkening (dimout) fabric is heavier than a standard roller fabric, but still lets a soft glow through, enough to see the room’s outline in daytime. Light-filtering fabric softens glare but is meant for living areas where you want daylight. Buying the wrong grade is the commonest disappointment, so say clearly what you need the room to do.
Which blind type works best
Roller blinds are the practical default for bedrooms. They are slim, easy to wipe down, and the fabric is available in blackout grades. See our guide to roller blinds in Kolkata.
Roman blinds with a blackout lining fold into soft pleats and suit a master bedroom where you want the look of fabric. They cost more and stack thicker at the top. Our Roman blinds buying guide explains the trade-offs.
Wooden and venetian blinds are good at controlling light angle, but the gaps between slats mean they are not true blackout. Choose them for a study or living room, not for a sleep room.
Zebra blinds alternate sheer and solid bands. They are lovely for glare control, though the sheer bands mean they will not black out a room on their own.
The fitting detail that decides everything
A blackout fabric on a badly fitted blind still lets light in. Light escapes around the edges, so how the blind is mounted matters as much as what it is made of.
An inside-recess mount looks neat but leaves a small gap on each side where daylight shows as a bright outline. An outside-recess mount, with the blind wider and taller than the opening, overlaps the wall and is the better choice when darkness is the priority. For the darkest rooms, side channels or a pelmet close the remaining gaps. Accurate measurements decide all of this, which is why we cover it in how to measure for blinds.
Blackout and Kolkata’s sun
West- and south-facing windows take the harshest light in the afternoon, and a pale or reflective-backed blackout fabric on those windows cuts glare and a good share of radiant heat. It is not insulation and will not replace an air conditioner, but it reduces the work the AC has to do. For east-facing bedrooms, the case for blackout is less about heat and more about the early light that wakes you.
Blinds, curtains, or both
Blinds sit close to the glass and look clean. Curtains hang wider, overlap the wall and add softness. If total darkness matters, the most reliable solution is a layered one: a blackout roller blind for the light, and a curtain in front for the look. Our guide to blinds versus curtains and the blackout curtains guide will help you decide which combination suits your room.
Manual or motorised
Bedroom blinds are operated every day, which makes them a sensible place to consider a motor, especially on tall windows or when you want several blinds to move together. Read what motorised blinds cost before you decide, and the broader blinds price guide for how each style is priced.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the difference between blackout and room-darkening blinds?
Blackout fabric is coated or multi-layered so that essentially no light passes through the cloth itself. Room-darkening (dimout) fabric is thicker than a normal roller fabric but still lets a soft glow through. If you sleep in the day, work night shifts, or have a child who wakes at first light, choose true blackout. If you only want to cut glare and keep the room restful, dimout is usually enough.
Do blackout blinds make a room completely dark?
Not by themselves. The fabric blocks the light, but light still leaks around the edges of a blind that hangs inside the window recess. For a properly dark room, mount the blind outside the recess with a few inches of overlap on each side, or pair it with a pelmet or side channels.
Are blackout blinds good for Kolkata’s heat?
They help, but they are not insulation. A light-coloured, reflective-backed blackout fabric facing the sun stops a lot of radiant heat and glare, particularly on west-facing windows in the afternoon. It will not cool a room the way an AC does, but it reduces the load on one.
Which blackout blind is best for a bedroom?
A roller blind in blackout fabric is the most practical choice: slim, easy to clean and simple to operate. A Roman blind with a blackout lining looks softer and suits a master bedroom, but costs more and takes more wall and ceiling space when raised. For the darkest result, layer a blackout roller under a sheer or decorative curtain.
Can blackout blinds be motorised?
Yes. Blackout rollers are among the most common blinds to motorise, since a bedroom blind is used every morning and evening. Motorisation is worth considering for tall windows or for operating several blinds at once.
How do I clean a blackout blind?
Dust it with a soft dry cloth or a vacuum on a low setting, and spot-clean marks with a barely damp cloth. Avoid soaking or scrubbing, which can damage the coating on the back of the fabric. Check the care notes for your specific fabric.
Is it better to choose blackout blinds or blackout curtains?
It depends on the window. Blinds sit close to the glass, look cleaner and suit kitchens, studies and narrow windows. Curtains block more light at the edges and add warmth and softness. Many Kolkata bedrooms do best with both: a blackout blind for the light, and a curtain for the look.
