5 do’s and don’ts while buying curtains

5 do’s and don’ts while buying curtains

Curtains influence light, privacy, colour and the apparent height of a room. These five practical checks are the ones our Avikar furnishing consultants use most often when helping Kolkata homeowners choose fabrics and finishes.

Choose curtains as part of the whole room—not as an isolated fabric decision.

1 — Scale and pattern

Match the pattern to the window

Don’t: use an oversized, busy print on a small window; it can make the opening feel crowded.

Do: choose solids, soft textures or a restrained motif for compact windows. Larger windows can carry broader patterns or coordinated fabric panels.

2 — Existing finishes

Let curtains complement the room

Don’t: repeat a strong geometric pattern when the wallpaper, rug or laminate already dominates the space.

Do: echo one colour from the room and introduce a calmer texture or a different-scale pattern.

3 — Light and privacy

Layer sheers with practical curtains

Don’t: choose only by colour and forget afternoon glare, street-facing privacy or early-morning sunlight.

Do: combine sheers with lined or blackout curtains where you need flexible daylight and privacy throughout the day.

4. Mount curtains high enough

Installing the track or rod closer to the ceiling usually makes a room feel taller and gives the curtain a cleaner fall. Avoid stopping the fabric awkwardly above the floor; decide intentionally between a crisp floor-skimming finish and a softer puddled look.

5. Check the fabric in your own light

Fabric can look very different under showroom lighting and in a Kolkata home during morning and afternoon sun. View a generous sample beside your wall colour, furniture and flooring before finalising. Also confirm lining, pleat style, track position, cleaning needs and the finished width—not only the price per metre.
