Sheer curtains are usually treated as an afterthought — something to hang up while you decide on the “real” curtains. That’s a mistake. On their own, sheers control how a room feels through the day: how much street dust and glare stays out, how private a ground-floor window feels, and how the light lands on a wall by afternoon.

Sheer curtains soften daylight while keeping a room bright, shown here with a matching pelmet.
What Sheers Actually Do in a Kolkata Home
Kolkata’s traffic dust, humidity and long bright afternoons make sheers more useful here than in most climates. A good sheer softens harsh midday sun without blocking it completely, keeps a room feeling private from neighbouring buildings without shutting out light, and adds a layer of texture that a bare window never has. Most homes we work with use sheers as a permanent daytime layer, with a blackout curtain or blind behind them for night.
Choosing the Right Sheer Fabric
Not all sheers behave the same way. A tight voile filters more light and holds its shape better in a ceiling fan’s draft; an open-weave net lets in more light and movement but shows more of what’s behind it. Weight affects drape too — heavier sheers fall straighter and look more tailored, while lighter ones billow more. Ivory and off-white remain the most popular choices because they suit almost any wall colour, but warmer dyed sheers work well when you want the fabric itself to read as a design choice rather than just a filter.

Layering Sheers With Blinds or Blackout Curtains
For bedrooms, we almost always recommend pairing sheers with a blackout curtain or blind mounted on a second track — sheers during the day, blackout at night. For living rooms and dining areas, a sheer on its own is often enough, since the goal there is usually softness and privacy rather than complete darkness. Getting the double-track measurement right at the start avoids a cramped, overlapping look later.

Measurement and Installation
Sheers show every mistake more visibly than a heavier curtain does — a sheer that’s an inch too short or pools unevenly on the floor is hard to miss. Our technicians visit your home to measure the exact window and track width before any fabric is cut, and the sheer is stitched to your window rather than sold off a standard size. This is the same process we use for every curtain and blind we install.
Avikar’s Sheer Curtain Service
Our soft-furnishings team, led by Gaitry Sood, has been fitting curtains for Kolkata homes since 1971. We carry a wide range of sheer fabrics in-store, help you match them to your existing curtains or blinds, and handle measurement, stitching and installation as one process — not three separate vendors. Visit our Central Avenue showroom or book a consultation to see fabric samples against your own window.

Frequently Asked Questions
Can sheers be used without a second curtain layer?
Yes, especially in living rooms and dining areas where full darkness isn’t the goal — a sheer alone gives privacy and softens light through the day.
Do sheer curtains work with motorised tracks?
Yes, sheers can be fitted to motorised tracks the same way as regular curtains, including as the front layer over a motorised blackout curtain.
How do I clean sheer curtains?
Most sheer fabrics we stock are machine-washable on a gentle cycle; we’ll flag any that need dry cleaning at the time of purchase.
