An accent chair is the easiest piece of furniture to fall in love with and the easiest to place badly. We have watched it happen from behind this counter for over fifty years: someone buys a silhouette they cannot stop thinking about, takes it home, pushes it flat against the wall beside the television, and then wonders why the room feels more crowded than before.

The chair is almost never the problem. The placement is. A single occasional chair carries more visual weight per square foot than nearly anything else in a living room, which is exactly why it can lift a space or fight it. First, decide what the chair is actually for

Before anything else, be honest about the job. In practice an accent chair does one of three things, and most disappointment comes from buying for one purpose and using it for another.

Genuine seating. If guests will sit in it for an hour at a time, it needs real seat depth, a back that supports the shoulder blades, and a fabric that forgives daily use. A solitary spot. A reading chair can be tighter and more upright, but it must have decent light and a surface within arm’s reach or it will go unused. Pure composition. Sometimes a chair exists to balance a heavy sofa wall or resolve a dead corner, and comfort is secondary. That is when to buy the sculptural one.

Four placements that genuinely work in a Kolkata flat

Diagonal to the sofa. The most reliable arrangement we know. Set the chair at roughly forty-five degrees to one end of the sofa rather than square-on. It opens up conversation, softens the boxiness of a rectangular room, and stops the seating group from reading like a waiting area.

The corner nook. Most flats here have one awkward corner that collects nothing but a clothes horse. A chair angled into it, with a slim side table and a floor lamp, turns dead space into the most-used seat in the house. Do not push it flush into the angle: leave a few inches of breathing room behind the back.

The flanking pair. Two matching chairs facing the sofa across a coffee table give a living room a symmetry that reads as considered rather than showy, and nobody has to perch.

Facing the light. Turn a single chair towards a window or balcony door instead of the television. In a city where good natural light is rationed by whatever the neighbours have built, a chair that catches the morning sun earns its place within a week.

One caution specific to how flats here are planned: the living room is very often the through-route to the bedrooms. Keep a clear walking path of roughly two and a half to three feet, and never let a chair block a balcony door. You will resent it by the second monsoon.

Get the proportion right before you worry about the fabric

Proportion is where most accent chairs go wrong, and it is the part nobody photographs. A few figures worth carrying into a showroom with you.

Keep the seat height within two or three inches of your sofa’s seat height, or conversation across the group feels oddly tiered. Keep the chair within about six feet of the coffee table so a cup is reachable without standing. In an open-plan room, avoid a chair whose back rises well above the sofa back, because it will visually chop the space in half. And if your ceiling is low, as in many older buildings around Central Avenue, a low-backed or open-frame chair will do far more than a tall wing. Pair it with what you already own, using one thread

The instinct is to match the chair to the sofa. Resist it. A chair that matches everything stops being an accent and quietly becomes spare seating.

Instead, pick a single thread that ties it in: the warm undertone of your dining table repeated in the chair’s wood, a cane detail echoing an existing screen or headboard, or a fabric picking up one colour already present in a rug or cushion. What Kolkata’s climate asks of an accent chair

Humidity is the variable nobody accounts for at the point of purchase. Timber that has not been properly seasoned will move through a Kolkata monsoon, which is why we work in solid mahogany and season it before it reaches a workshop bench. Cane and rope detailing want airflow, so a woven-back chair is genuinely the better choice for a closed, unventilated room than a fully upholstered one.

Avoid pressing an upholstered back flat against an external wall that sweats in July; leave a gap and let air move behind it. Because our chairs are built to order rather than pulled off a warehouse shelf, allow roughly two to four weeks from confirmation, and each carries a one-year manufacturer’s warranty covering defects in materials and workmanship — the same standard architects and designers rely on for larger projects.
