Upholstery Fabrics in Kolkata: A Buying Guide for Sofas, Chairs and More

Upholstery Fabrics in Kolkata: A Buying Guide for Sofas, Chairs and More

Upholstery fabric is the one decision in a furniture project that people research the least and regret the most. The frame of a sofa or dining chair will usually outlast two or three fabric changes, so getting the fabric right (for the way you actually live, not just how it looks in the showroom) matters more than most buyers expect.

Why Fabric Choice Makes or Breaks a Reupholstery Job

A beautiful fabric in the wrong weight or weave can pill within a year, sag on a loose cushion, or feel unbearably hot through a Kolkata summer. We’ve re-covered sofas where the fabric itself was the entire reason the piece looked tired, even though the frame and cushioning underneath were still in excellent shape. Before any of our clients pick a colour, we walk them through durability, weave and maintenance first, because that’s what actually decides how the piece looks in year three, not year one.

Fabric Types We Stock

  • Cotton and cotton-blend fabrics — breathable, versatile, and the most forgiving choice for Kolkata’s humidity; ideal for everyday sofas and armchairs.
  • Velvet — a soft, light-reflecting pile that reads as premium immediately; best suited to accent chairs, headboards, or statement sofas rather than high-traffic family seating.
  • Linen and linen-blends — a relaxed, textured finish popular in contemporary interiors; slightly less stain-resistant than cotton, so we usually recommend a protective treatment.
  • Leatherette and faux leather — wipeable and durable, a strong pick for homes with young children, pets, or heavy daily use.
  • Performance and stain-resistant fabrics — engineered weaves designed specifically to resist spills and wear; increasingly our default recommendation for dining chairs and family lounges.

Matching Fabric to Furniture and Use

The right fabric depends entirely on what the piece has to survive, not just the room it sits in.

  • Sofas and daily-use seating — prioritise abrasion resistance and stain resistance; cotton-blends and performance fabrics perform best here.
  • Dining chairs — food and drink spills are inevitable, so we almost always steer clients toward wipeable or performance-treated fabrics.
  • Headboards and occasional chairs — lower daily wear means you can prioritise look and texture, which is where velvet earns its place.
  • Hospitality and commercial upholstery — hotels, restaurants and offices need fabrics rated for heavy, constant use; we work directly with commercial-grade suppliers for these projects.

How Avikar Helps You Choose the Right Fabric

We’ve been sourcing and fitting upholstery fabric in Kolkata since 1971, and most of what we do is steer people away from a fabric that looks right in isolation but won’t hold up on their specific piece.

  • An extensive in-showroom swatch library, so you can see and feel real fabric rather than judging from a screen.
  • In-home consultation, where we look at your actual light, existing decor and how the room is used before recommending anything.
  • Honest durability guidance based on decades of re-covering furniture across Kolkata homes, hotels and offices.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much fabric does a standard 3-seater sofa need?
Most 3-seater sofas need roughly 12-16 metres depending on the pattern, fabric width and the complexity of the frame. We confirm the exact quantity during measurement.

Is velvet practical for a Kolkata home?
Velvet works well on lower-use pieces like accent chairs and headboards. For high-traffic family seating, we usually recommend a performance fabric instead.

Can you match fabric to my existing furniture or curtains?
Yes — our consultants bring swatches to your home specifically to check the match against your existing decor in natural light.

Do you offer stain-resistant treatments?
Yes, several of our fabric lines come pre-treated, and we can apply an additional protective treatment on request.
