Why Kolkata Is Harder on an Accent Chair Than a Sofa

A sofa is usually a few feet from a wall, upholstered in a fabric chosen for wear, and used every day — which keeps air moving around it and keeps moisture from settling in. An accent chair is more often pushed into a corner, placed against a wall to fill a gap, or left unused for stretches between guests. That stillness is the problem: still, humid air is exactly what lets boucle hold onto moisture, lets a cane weave stay damp instead of drying out, and lets a mahogany joint absorb and release humidity unevenly through the monsoon and the AC season that follows it.

The Mahogany Frame: Wipe, Don’t Wet

Every Avikar accent chair — Barrel, Veena, Solace, Élan, Aureo and the upcoming Cresta — is built on a solid, kiln-dried mahogany frame. Kiln-drying means the wood has already been seasoned before it reached our workshop, but that doesn’t make it immune to Kolkata’s humidity swings. Wipe the frame with a soft, dry cloth regularly rather than a wet one, keep it out of direct, prolonged sunlight (which dries and fades the grain unevenly), and give it a light polish during the monsoon months, when humidity is at its highest and the finish needs the extra protection most.

Boucle and Textured Weaves (Barrel, Veena Seat): The Fabric That Holds Onto Humidity

Boucle’s looped, textured surface is what gives the Barrel chair its soft, tactile look — and it’s also what makes it slower to release moisture than a flat weave. In a closed, unventilated room during the monsoon, that looped texture can hold onto humidity long enough to pick up a musty smell. Vacuum it with a soft brush attachment rather than a hard one, which can snag the loops, and if you spill something, blot it immediately with a clean, damp cloth rather than scrubbing — scrubbing pushes the stain deeper into the loops instead of lifting it out.

Velvet and Rope Weave (Solace): Respect the Nap

Solace pairs a hand-knotted rope-weave frame detail with plush velvet upholstery, and velvet has one rule that most generic cleaning advice skips: it has a nap, or pile direction, and brushing against it rather than with it is what causes those patchy light-and-dark marks after cleaning. Brush in one consistent direction with a soft upholstery brush, and keep the chair out of the direct line of an AC blast — cold air hitting one section of the pile repeatedly flattens it unevenly over time, in a way that’s very difficult to reverse. As with boucle, blot spills rather than scrub them.

Hand-Woven Cane (Veena’s Back, Cresta): Airflow Is the Whole Job

Natural cane is a living material even after it’s woven — it expands and contracts with the air around it. In an AC-heavy room through Kolkata’s winter, cane can dry out and become brittle; in an unventilated corner through the monsoon, it can stay damp and loosen at the joints. Either way, the fix is the same: don’t box a cane-backed chair into a corner where air can’t move behind it, and don’t seat it directly under a vent that blasts it with dry, cold air for hours at a time. A light dusting with a dry brush is normally all the routine care cane needs.

The High-Gloss Finish (Aureo): Skip Harsh Cleaners

Aureo’s continuous curved frame is finished in a high-gloss protective coating, and the biggest risk to it isn’t Kolkata’s weather — it’s the wrong cleaning product. Ammonia- and alcohol-based cleaners, the kind often reached for on glass or hard surfaces, will dull a gloss finish over repeated use. A soft, slightly damp microfibre cloth, wiped rather than scrubbed, keeps the shine intact.

The One Placement Mistake That Undoes All of the Above

Whatever the fabric or finish, one habit does more damage than anything else: pushing an upholstered chair back flat against an external or bathroom-backing wall that sweats during the wetter months. Without a gap for air to move behind it, moisture from the wall transfers directly into the upholstery and frame joint, regardless of how well you otherwise care for the piece. Leaving even a few centimetres of clearance behind the chair solves this in one move.

When It’s Beyond Cleaning

Routine care extends a chair’s life, but it doesn’t fix a frame joint that’s worked loose, foam that’s gone flat, or a fabric that’s frayed through years of use. How often should I clean my accent chair?
A light dusting or vacuum every week is enough for most homes. Deeper attention — checking the frame, brushing velvet nap, dusting cane — is worth doing at the start and end of the monsoon, since that’s when humidity swings are sharpest.

Can I vacuum boucle or cane without damaging it?
Yes, as long as you use a soft brush attachment rather than a hard nozzle or beater bar, which can snag boucle’s loops or fray cane strands.

Will Kolkata’s monsoon damage a solid mahogany frame?
Not if it’s cared for — our frames are kiln-dried before they reach the showroom, which is the main defence against humidity swings. Keeping it out of direct sun and giving it a monsoon-season polish is normal upkeep, not a sign of a problem.

Does running the AC all winter hurt a cane-backed chair?
It can, if the chair sits directly under a vent for long stretches, since cane dries out and becomes brittle in constant dry, cold air. Repositioning the chair away from the direct airflow is usually enough.

How do I get a stain out of velvet without leaving a mark?
Blot it immediately with a clean, damp cloth — never scrub — and once it’s dry, brush the pile in one consistent direction to even out the nap.
