Density is the number most buyers never ask about. Denser foam contains more material, costs more to make, and holds its shape for longer. A lower-density mattress often feels pleasant in the first month and softens unevenly in the second year. If a salesperson cannot tell you what the core is made of, treat that as information.
3. Thickness and layers
A taller mattress has more material in it and usually costs more, but height is not the same as quality. What matters is how the layers are arranged: a supportive base, a transition layer and a comfort layer on top. A thick mattress made of one uniform slab of low-grade foam is worse value than a slimmer one with a properly built structure.
4. Size, and the size of your actual bed

Firmness is not a price tier
A common mistake is to assume that a firmer mattress is a better, costlier one, or that soft means budget. Support and firmness are different things. A mattress can feel soft on the surface and still support your spine well, and a very hard one can leave your shoulders and hips under pressure.
