Ask ten people in Kolkata what a zebra blind is and you will get several different answers — day-night blind, combi blind, dual shade, twin roller. They are all the same product. The confusion is not accidental: almost everything ranking online for this term is either a wholesale directory listing with a stale price on it, or a guide written for a climate nothing like ours.
We have been fitting window coverings in this city since 1971, and zebra blinds are now among the few things people walk into the showroom asking for by name. They deserve the interest. They also carry one limitation that hardly anyone selling them mentions, and it is far better to know it before you order than after.
What a zebra blind actually is
A zebra blind is a roller blind made from one continuous length of fabric woven in alternating bands — one sheer, one solid, repeating the whole way down. That fabric passes over a roller at the top and returns behind itself, so at any point in the window you have two layers sitting one in front of the other.
Pull the chain a little and the solid bands slide out of alignment, opening sheer windows across the face of the blind and letting filtered light through. Pull further and the solid bands come back into line, closing the blind to a near-solid panel. That single mechanism is the entire appeal. You are not choosing between open and shut, as you are with a plain roller. You are dialling light in degrees, with one hand, in about two seconds.
What zebra blinds are genuinely good at
Killing afternoon glare without killing the room. Kolkata’s problem window is the west-facing one from about three o’clock onwards. A curtain drawn against that glare turns the room into a cave; a zebra blind set to its sheer position cuts the hard light while leaving the room usable in daylight. For a living room you actually sit in at four in the afternoon, this is the whole argument.
Daytime privacy where buildings sit close together. In much of central Kolkata the neighbouring wall is eight feet away. During daylight the outside is brighter than the inside, so the sheer bands read as opaque from the street while you can still see out comfortably.
Clean lines in a compact flat. The blind sits inside the reveal or just above it and takes no wall or floor space at all. In a small room that is worth more than most people credit before they live with it.
Simple upkeep. It is flat woven fabric with no slats to dust individually. Through the dry, dusty months and after the monsoon, that difference shows up as time you do not spend on a ladder.
The night-time limitation nobody mentions
The optical trick that makes a zebra blind private by day reverses after dark. Once your lights are on inside and it is black outside, the brighter side is now the inside — and the sheer bands, even with the blind fully closed, will not completely conceal movement. From close range a passer-by can make out shadow and silhouette through the sheer sections and along the seams where the two layers meet.
This is not a manufacturing defect and it is not a reason to avoid the product. It is simply how a two-layer semi-sheer fabric behaves. What it does mean is this: do not specify a zebra blind on its own for a ground-floor bedroom facing a street or a shared courtyard, or for any window where complete night privacy matters to you. The remedy is straightforward. Pair the blind with a curtain on the same window, or fit a blackout curtain in that one room and keep zebra blinds everywhere else. Anyone who tells you a zebra blind blacks out a bedroom has not stood outside one at night.
Zebra, roller, Roman, wooden or honeycomb?
Most people arrive having decided on zebra blinds and leave with two or three types across the flat, because different windows are asking different questions. Here is how the options behave in practice.

Which rooms in a Kolkata flat suit them
Living rooms and drawing rooms. The natural home for a zebra blind, and the room where its light control earns its keep every single day.
Studies and home offices. Screen glare is a light-angle problem, not a brightness problem. Being able to close the sheer bands over the top third of a window and leave the rest open is exactly the control you want at a desk.
Dining rooms and balcony-facing windows. Good, provided the balcony door is not the one you use twenty times a day — a chain-operated blind on a constantly used door becomes a nuisance.
Where we would steer you elsewhere: street-facing bedrooms on lower floors, for the night-privacy reason above; and kitchens, bathrooms and balconies exposed to rain, where a wipe-clean PVC roller blind will outlast a fabric one by years.
What to settle before you place the order
How open the sheer band is. Zebra fabrics vary in how much light and view the sheer sections pass. A tighter weave gives you more daytime privacy and less view out; a more open one does the reverse. Look at samples against your own window light rather than under showroom downlights, and hold them up at the distance your neighbour’s wall actually sits.
Inside or outside the reveal. Fitted inside the reveal a zebra blind looks neater but leaves a small light gap at each edge. Fitted outside, above the opening, it covers the gap but projects further into the room. Grilles, window air-conditioning units and deep sills usually decide this for you, which is why we measure on site rather than over the phone.
Cassette or open roller. A cassette conceals the roller tube and the rolled fabric behind a neat headbox. It costs a little more and it is what makes an installation look finished rather than fitted.
Chain side, and children. Decide which side the chain falls before manufacture, not after. If there are small children in the flat, ask for the chain to be tensioned and anchored to the wall.
Whether to motorise. Zebra blinds run on the same roller principle as a standard roller blind, so motorisation is worth discussing for tall, awkward or hard-to-reach windows — particularly a stairwell or a high living-room clerestory. Can you see through zebra blinds at night?
Partly, yes. With the blind fully closed and your lights on, someone standing close to the window outside can usually make out shadows and silhouettes through the sheer bands, because the inside is now the brighter side. You will not be clearly visible, but it is not full privacy. For a bedroom or a street-facing ground-floor window, pair the blind with a curtain or use a blackout roller instead.
What is the difference between a zebra blind and a roller blind?
Both roll up on a tube at the top. A roller blind is a single sheet of fabric, so it is either up or down. A zebra blind is one fabric woven in alternating sheer and solid bands, doubled back on itself, so sliding the layers in and out of alignment lets you adjust how much light comes through without moving the blind up or down.
Do zebra blinds block out light completely?
No. Even in the closed position the sheer bands transmit some light, and there is usually a small gap at the sides of the reveal. If you need true darkness for a bedroom, a nursery or a media room, use a blackout roller blind or blackout curtains and keep zebra blinds for the living areas.
Are zebra blinds suitable for Kolkata’s humidity?
In dry rooms, yes — they are a synthetic woven fabric on a metal tube, and they handle our summers well. Where we would not put them is a kitchen with cooking grease in the air, a bathroom, or an open balcony that takes rain directly. In those spots a PVC roller blind you can simply wipe down is the sounder choice.
How do you clean zebra blinds?
Dust them with a soft brush attachment or a dry microfibre cloth every few weeks, working downwards with the blind fully lowered and the bands closed. For a mark, dab gently with a barely damp cloth and let it dry fully before rolling the blind up. Avoid soaking the fabric or scrubbing it, which distorts the weave along the band edges.
Can zebra blinds be motorised?
They work on the same roller mechanism as a standard roller blind, so motorisation is worth discussing, especially for high or hard-to-reach windows.
