Boucle, velvet and hand-woven cane sit at different points on the scale. Boucle has a looped texture that needs careful tailoring. Velvet shows every stitching flaw, so it demands a steadier hand. Cane is woven by hand and cannot be rushed. Whichever you choose, ask what the fabric is meant for. A cloth made for seating survives years of use; a decorative fabric can look tired within one season.

Cushioning you cannot see

Foam density and seat construction are the least visible part of an accent chair and the first thing to go wrong on a cheap one. A seat that feels plush in the shop can flatten within a year if the foam is thin or low-density. When you visit a showroom, sit for a few minutes, not a few seconds. Lean back, shift your weight and press the arm. You are testing what the photograph cannot show.

Finish and protection

• Whether the price is for ready stock or made to order
• The warranty terms, in writing, including what is covered and who repairs it
• Delivery and any assembly, since a chair that arrives in parts is a different purchase
