Diwali Home Makeover in Kolkata: What to Change in One Room Before the Festival

Diwali and Kali Puja fall in early November this year, and in most Kolkata homes the same pattern repeats. The lights go up, the marigold arrives, a few cushion covers get swapped, and the real furnishing jobs, the curtains that have faded since last year, the sofa nobody has looked at properly in months, get pushed to “after the festival”. We have been furnishing Kolkata homes from Central Avenue since 1971, and the families who enjoy Diwali most are usually the ones who decided what to change early and kept the list short.

This guide is for the weeks between Durga Puja and Diwali, when the house is tired, guests are coming, and there is still time to do a few things properly. If you want the longer-lead version of this thinking, our Durga Puja home preparation timeline covers ordering backwards from the festival.

Start with the room guests actually sit in

Pick one room, almost always the drawing room, and treat it as the project. A single room done well photographs, hosts and feels better than five rooms given a light touch. Stand at the door as a visitor would and note what your eye lands on first. It is usually one of three things: the windows, the main sofa, or a bare wall.

Curtains: the fastest change with the biggest visual effect

Windows take up more of a room’s visual field than any single piece of furniture, which is why new curtains change a room more than almost anything else you can buy. Before Diwali, three decisions matter.

Colour. Festive does not have to mean loud. Warm neutrals, deep greens, rust and muted golds sit comfortably under diyas and string lights, while very cool greys can look flat in lamp light. Our guide to choosing curtain colours in Kolkata walks through how colour behaves in our daylight.

Layers. Evening gatherings with lights on make sheers genuinely useful: they soften the glare of street and building lights while keeping the room open. A sheer under a heavier curtain also lets you control privacy without closing the room in. See our notes on choosing sheer curtains.

Fit. Curtains that are the wrong length or too thin on fullness look cheap whatever the fabric. If you are ordering new, getting the measurements right comes first, and our curtain measuring guide and made-to-measure curtain process explain what we need and how stitching is planned. Made-to-measure work needs a workroom slot and a fitting visit, so decide early rather than in the last week.

If your existing curtains are still sound, a proper clean can recover a surprising amount. Check our advice on washing versus dry-cleaning curtains before you put anything lined or coated in a machine.

The sofa: repair, re-cover or leave it alone

Most sofas heading into the festive season do not need replacing. They need an honest assessment. Sagging seats, worn arm tops and a tired fabric are separate problems with separate fixes, and our guide to what can and cannot be repaired on a sofa will help you decide. If the frame is sound and only the fabric is the issue, re-covering is often the better route, and choosing the right upholstery fabric matters more than the colour name on the swatch. For a quicker refresh, a thorough clean following our sofa cleaning advice is worth doing before guests arrive.

One wall, not four

If a room feels flat, a single feature wall does more than repainting everything. Wallpaper is one way to do it, and our wallpaper buying guide for Kolkata covers what to check before you commit, including surface preparation and how patterns behave across a wall.

A simple order of work

  1. Choose the one room and decide what matters most there: windows, seating or the wall.
  2. Visit the showroom or call us for fabric and finish samples, and take them home to see them in your own light, morning and evening.
  3. Book anything that needs measuring, stitching or fitting first.
  4. Leave the small changes, cushion covers, lamps and flowers, for the final week.

Be realistic about timing. A workroom’s schedule fills up as festivals approach, and a good result needs a sample decision, a measurement and a fitting. We would rather tell you honestly what can be done in time than promise something we cannot deliver properly.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is it too late to order new curtains before Diwali?

It depends on the fabric and whether they are made to measure. Ready fabrics and straightforward stitching move faster than anything customised. Call or WhatsApp us with your window sizes and we will tell you plainly what is realistic for your date.

What curtain colours suit Diwali decor?

Warm, grounded tones such as cream, beige, rust, olive and muted gold work well with festive lighting and traditional decor. Choose by how the colour looks in your room at night as well as in daylight.

Should I replace or repair my sofa before the festival?

If the frame is solid and the cushioning can be restored, repair or re-covering is usually better value than replacing. A showroom assessment will tell you which applies to your sofa.

Can I refresh just one room instead of the whole house?

Yes, and we recommend it. Focus on the room where guests sit and spend the most time. One well-finished room makes a bigger impression than several half-done ones.

Do you help with measurement and installation?

Yes. We offer curtain measurement, installation and interior consultation, so you do not have to work out sizes alone.
